About Greater Khingan Range Nature Reserve

The Greater Khingan Range Nature Reserve spans the mountainous Greater Khingan (Da Hinggan) Range that stretches along the border of Heilongjiang Province and Inner Mongolia in northeast China. This nature reserve protects some of the largest remaining boreal forests in the country, characterized by ancient cold-temperate coniferous ecosystems dominated by larch, spruce, and pine trees. The region is a vital sanctuary for a wide array of wildlife, including endangered species such as the Siberian musk deer, sable, lynx, and the elusive Amur tiger. The reserve covers a mixture of dense forests, river valleys, marshes, and wetlands, creating an ecologically rich and diverse habitat. Established to conserve these fragile ecosystems, the reserve plays an important role in scientific research, forestry conservation, and environmental education. Outdoor recreation within the reserve focuses on hiking, wildlife watching, and nature photography, with a network of trails that provide access to scenic lookouts, ancient forest groves, and river gorges. Notable landmarks include the diverse forest landscapes and the Taipingqiao geological formations. Visitors are drawn to the reserve for its tranquil wilderness experience, exceptional biodiversity, and opportunities to experience authentic northeastern China's wild nature. Seasonal changes dramatically transform the scenery—lush greens in the summer, vibrant fall foliage, and serene snow-covered forests in the winter offer all-season appeal for nature enthusiasts and researchers alike.
